Alabaster
Artist Statement

I like to do stone and clay sculpture. Clay lets me try, and make mistakes, and correct them. It has a lot of flexibility. Stone requires a lot more patience, and I have to remember that I can’t put anything back, if I take it away. My favorite tool for stone is the Dreml, because I can make small things and be precise. For large works, or for roughing out, I have a big drill. For clay I like to use my hands. My work is figurative, and aside from realism, my second love is to use some ancient form of art for inspiration. I have made three pieces in the style of ancient Mexican art. I like alabaster with some color. I sometimes use the color in the stone to guide my forms. When I begin a piece, I use photos, and maquettes, inspired by the subject matter, often an animal. When a work is going well, it is very rewarding. I feel I enter into the piece of sculpture. My training started with Rebecca Davis and Story Kornbluth in Adult Education. Seasoned sculptor friends have helped me. I have shown my work with the Santa Barbara Sculptor’s Guild and the Santa Barbara Art Association. I also paint in oils.
